5 Inspirational Videos for Drummers

This is the most subjective thing in the world, ever. It is also a list that changes, for me, on almost a daily basis. But regardless here’s 5 inspirational videos all drummers should watch.

5.  Vinnie Colaiuta Live at the Baked Potato (Part 1)

OK so the quality ain’t great but it’s a drummers view of a jazz gig with one of the best drummers in the world behind the kit. Awesome.

4.  Dave Weckl, Steve Gadd & Vinnie Colaiuta at the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert

If you’re a drummer and don’t own this video, shame on you – GO OUT AND BUY IT!

3.  TEDxZurich – Jojo Mayer – Exploring the distance between 0 and 1

Jojo Mayer is an awesome drummer and the master of putting drum machines in their place. This is a fascinating TEDx talk by the man himself.

2.  Gavin Harrison – The Chicken (drum solo) (Live on Letterman 08-23-2011)

The master of polyrhythms and I just LOVE his drum sound. His playing is SO tight here… and not just Gavin, the band too. Some lovely playing, it all just sounds great and really is faultless.

1.  Dennis Chambers – Big solo

Dennis Chambers is still my favourite drummer of all time. He has the sickening ability to play ambidextrously and forced ‘out of time’. And by that I mean he can play at one tempo on his feet while playing in a completely different time signature AND tempo on his hands. OK, you really don’t want to be doing that in your pub rock band but ABSOLUTE control and independence of his 4 limbs coupled with amazing speed and just generally being a down right funky drummer, ranks him at #1 for me.
